I was asked what we often play at the retreat, and decided to put up a list of some stuff we played in the past. This is biased based on what I had chord sheets for and often things I have recorded. If you are know and are interested in giving other players a heads up with songs you might want to jam, then I encourage you to let us know. Dave has added to it, and a few more guys signed up. Anyone wanting to lead a song should have the lyrics and be able to lead at least the chorus.
For music, we try mostly to work with three or four chord songs, so that a few musicians can get up to speed quickly. Often we use describe things in Nashville Notation, which means many common songs can be described in 1, 4 & 5 (I, IV, & V)
In the Key of C that would be
C F G
I IV V
the full notation for all 7 chords would be
I ii iii IV V vi vii
but since in many genres are based on the major chords you can easily jam just on the I IV & V,
and the song lead need only teach everybody the exceptions.
For song sections, it is good to teach and announce the structure, such as the classic:
Verse Choruse Verse Choruse Bridge Chorus
If the bridge is has a bunch of unexpected chords tell us that you will take it.
It's nice for people to know when to come in, classically with more people playing the chorus.
5-7 chords songs have been best delivered solo.
If you have songs you are familiar with please bring them along.
